How to play fantasy cricket and win more contests in 2026.

A practical 11-minute guide to picking your first team, reading scoring rules, and avoiding the mistakes that drain 80% of new players' balances in week one.

What is fantasy cricket?

Fantasy cricket is a skill game where you pick 11 real-life players from the teams playing an upcoming match, set a captain and vice-captain, and earn points based on how those players actually perform on the field. The team with the most points wins the contest and the prize pool.

It is not sports betting. There is no wager on the outcome of the match itself. Your points come from individual player performance — runs scored, wickets taken, catches held, strike rate bonuses, economy rate bonuses. The skill is in picking the team, not in predicting the match winner.

How the scoring works in 2026

The 2026 Quriousbit scoring system mirrors the official T20 rules with a few India-friendly tweaks. A batter scores 1 point per run, 4 points for a boundary, 6 points for a six, 8 points for a fifty, and 16 points for a century. A bowler scores 25 points per wicket, with bonuses for maidens, hat-tricks, and LBW/Bowled dismissals.

Fielding points: 8 for a catch, 12 for a stumping, 12 for a run-out direct hit. Strike rate and economy rate bonuses apply for batters and bowlers who finish above or below the 140 and 7.50 thresholds respectively. Captain scores 2x, vice-captain 1.5x.

Common mistakes new players make

Four mistakes account for 80% of first-week bankroll losses. Mistake one: picking 7 batters and 4 bowlers, leaving the all-rounder slots empty. Mistake two: setting the captain as a marquee all-rounder who bats at 5 and bowls at the death — the role inconsistency kills the captain's points floor.

Mistake three: ignoring the toss and the playing XI announcement, which happen 30 minutes before the match. Mistake four: chasing yesterday's points. Form in T20s has a half-life of 2 to 3 matches, not 5. Use the form table from our players hub, not your gut.

  • Pick 1 keeper, 3-4 batters, 3-4 all-rounders, 3-4 bowlers — not 7 batters and 4 bowlers
  • Set captain to a top-order opener on a batting pitch, not to the franchise's biggest name
  • Always check the toss 30 minutes before the match — a player left out of the XI is a zero
  • Strategy: how to actually win contests

Winning a fantasy cricket contest is a function of three numbers: your team's projected points, your team's ownership percentage, and the contest type. In a head-to-head contest, you just need to beat one opponent — pick the high-projection team. In a mega contest (10,000+ entries), you need a low-ownership differential pick that other players are ignoring.

The rule of thumb: for every 10 contests you enter, expect to cash in 1-2 (10-20% ROI), win big in 0-1, and learn something useful in all 10. If you are winning big more than 10% of the time you are either skilled or running variance that will reverse. Track your entries in a spreadsheet.

    Frequently asked questions

Can I edit my team after the match starts?

Yes. Quriousbit allows unlimited swaps up to the toss. After the toss, you get 1 swap in the second innings of T20 matches (3 swaps in ODIs). The swap is free and reflects in the live scorecard within 5 seconds.

Is fantasy cricket legal in my state?

Fantasy cricket is legal in 26 of 28 Indian states, including Maharashtra, Karnataka, Delhi, Tamil Nadu, Gujarat, West Bengal, and Kerala. It is not available in Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Assam, Odisha, Sikkim, or Nagaland.

How much money do I need to start?

You can start with zero by playing free contests. For paid contests, the minimum add-money is ₹100 via UPI, and the smallest paid entry is ₹5. The GOQB150 bonus code gives you a 100% match on your first deposit, so ₹100 in becomes ₹200 in contest credits.

What happens if a player I picked is left out of the playing XI?

If a player is left out of the XI announced at the toss, your team is automatically re-balanced by the Quriousbit engine — the next best available player in the same role is added to your team, with the salary cap respected. No manual action needed.

How does the captain multiplier work?

Your captain scores 2x the points they earn on the field. Your vice-captain scores 1.5x. The remaining 9 players score 1x. So a captain who scores 80 points contributes 160 to your team's total. The choice of captain is the single biggest lever in fantasy cricket.
